Water quality changes taking place during the infiltration process of treated wastewater produced by the Yeast Industrial Company, Jordan, are discussed. It was found that the COD, NH4 + and P04 ~"contents decreased with depth. More than 80% of NH4 + and about 95% of P04 3 and COD were removed at a depth of 70 cm in the soil profile. However, the electrical conductivity (EC) of the infiltrated water, which was extracted from different depths, increased gradually due to the dissolutional processes of soluble minerals within the soil profile. Furthermore, the probable effect of the irrigation return flows of the treated wastewater used in irrigation on the groundwater resources of the area are discussed. Generally, it was found that land application of this sort of wastewater is an efficient method of further treatment taking into consideration the negligible effects of the wastewater on the groundwater resources in the area.

Assessment of radon-222 concentrations in buildings, building materials, water and soil in Jordan.

Monitoring of radon gas ((222)Rn) in Jordan was started in the early 1990s. Since then our radon group at Yarmouk University and others have carried out tens of studies that include measurements of indoor radon, radon in water, radon in soil and radon emanating from building materials. All major cities of Jordan had been surveyed, from the northern city of Irbid down to the southern port city o...

Evaluation of the Treatment of Pharmaceutical Industry Wastewater Using Chemical and Biological Methods (Case Study: Treatment of Wastewater Produced by Production of Methadone and Capecitabine)

Background & objectives: Pharmaceutical wastewater contains high concentrations of organic matter, high salt and difficult biodegradability, so it must be treated before discharge to the environment. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater (methadone feedstock and neutralized capecitabine) using chemical and biological methods. Methods: The laboratory ...
